Softball All-Star Program - Mandatory Parent Meetings

The “Burlingame Flames” are the league’s competitive or All-Star teams that play in ASA Junior Olympic “B” & “C” tournaments during the summer. Each year we form teams in the 10U, 12U, and 14U divisions. We also form several 8U teams to play a short season in both jamboree and elimination format tournaments.

The summer travel teams are an excellent way for players with above average softball talent or an exceptional desire to play to continue their season for up to two months each summer. The summer travel teams test their skills at a higher level of competition with the best players in our league playing against teams from other leagues across Northern California. The summer season consists of weekend tournaments some of which involve travel. The teams form right after the recreation season ends in early May. The team coaches, division coordinators, President and Vice President of BGS select players for each team based on skill demonstrated during the season, coach recommendations, formal tryouts (see below for dates) and overall availability to play during the summer.

To register for summer travel teams, please complete the following form and plan to attend the mandatory parent meeting on Wednesday April 23 at the Burlingame Park and Rec. The 8U meeting will be held at 6:30PM and the 10U and 12U divisions will begin at 7:30 PM. Please use the following googledoc to confirm your attendance CLICK HERE:

Tentative tryouts dates for 12U will be held on May 1. Registration begins at 5:30-6:00 and then tryouts from 6:00-7:00 PM at Ray Park. The 8U will be held on May 4. Registration begins at 12:30 PM and tryouts are from 1:00 PM-2:30 PM, and 10U registration begins at 2:15 PM and tryouts are from 2:45-4:00 PM. Again, these are tentative dates so we will update if any tryout times and dates change. If anybody cannot make the date for their division, they can come to the other tryouts or please have your coach send in a recommendation.

Stanford Softball Pre-Game Experience – Thursday 6 March 2014

Well, Mother Nature may have rained on our Opening Day, but we’ve still got our big softball night at the Stanford game to look forward to. This Thursday, 6 March is BGS’s night at Stanford – our girls will be called down to the field before the game to meet the Stanford players and participate in a Q&A session with them. We’ll all go in our uniform jerseys (parents and coaches, if you have a BGS T-shirt or jacket please don’t be shy about showing your colors), and will be welcomed over the PA. Watching the college players in action is a great experience for our girls any time, but having met them in person right before they take the field really puts it over the top.

We're trying to get a rough count of how many will attend - if you plan to go, please take a second to let us know by clicking on this link:

Please arrive by 5:15 – for directions to the stadium please see this link:

Opening Day Drought Relief - UPDATE SATURDAY 7 AM

UPDATE: Photo Day will go ahead today as planned, and games at Franklin are on - PLAY BALL!

As much as we're all happy to have some relief from this year's drought, it is posing some challenges to a successful Opening Day. There are 3 separate sets of weather-related postponements to be decided:

Games at Ray Park:
- As of 9 am Friday, the City has closed all natural grass fields for the weekend due to the rain they’ve already received. There will be no games or practices at Ray Park on March 1st or 2nd.
- Alternate plan – games will be individually rescheduled in consultation with coaches. While we attempt to do this at workable times for both teams, we have to accept that make-up times may conflict with other commitments, and that some players may need to miss a make-up game. Coaches are encouraged to generally understand if there are evenings or Sundays when they would not be able to field a full team – there is typically not time to go through a full cycle of finding a time that works for every player on both teams.

Games at Franklin:
- Probability/Criteria – Thanks to the turf at Franklin, it is unlikely that rain on Friday will be able to prevent games on Saturday, so these games will only be affected by rain on Saturday morning. Currently Accuweather rates this about 50% likely.
- Timeframe for decision – approximately 7:00 am Saturday. We’ll take a look at current conditions and the forecast for the morning, and decide whether to postpone the day’s games. We will try to err on the side of leaving the games as scheduled – if at game time it is raining steadily the coaches can make the call to postpone at game time.
- Alternate plan – games will be individually rescheduled by mutual agreement of the coaches. Because the 6U and 8U divisions do not require rescheduling of umpires, and do not maintain league standings, there’s more flexibility than with the older divisions.

- Probability/Criteria – the photographers will be equipped with canopies which will allow photos to proceed even in a very light rain. Factors that we’ll consider are: (a) whether the conditions will make the girls look bad in their photos (nobody wants photos looking like drowned rats); and (b) whether the equipment will be affected (if there’s moisture on the camera lenses the photos will not turn out well).
- Timeframe for decision – approximately 7:00 am Saturday.
- Alternate plan – if photos are rained out, our alternate day is Sunday 3/9 – we will use the same timings that were published for 3/1. If the timing is impossible for a team, the coach can request a different time.

We’ll update the league website ( by approximately 7 am Saturday.
